Brain Gym®

About Brain Gym®

Brain Gym® is a series of simple movements from the field of Educational Kinesiology (Edu-K) which activate the brain and body to increase neurological connections and facilitate optimal and stress free learning. Initially developed for children with learning difficulties, it was soon discovered that anyone can benefit from this program. People of all ages including students, business executives, athletes, teachers, artists, doctors and people in rehabilitation programs have used Brain Gym® to maximize their brain power. Through training and the regular practice of Brain Gym® movements, individuals may reduce stress, increase confidence, improve focus, concentration and memory and eliminate or minimize symptoms of ADD, dyslexia and other learning or behavioral challenges.

Briefly, Brain Gym® works by facilitating optimal achievement of mental potential through specific movement experiences. All acts of speech, hearing, vision, and coordination are learned through a complex repertoire of movements. Brain Gym® promotes efficient communication among the many nerve cells and functional centers located throughout the brain and sensory motor system. Blocks in learning occur when the body is tense and information cannot flow freely among these centers. The Brain Gym® movements stimulate this flow of information within the brain and sensory system, freeing the innate ability to learn and function at top efficiency.

Brain Gym® grew out of 25 years of clinical research beginning in the 1970’s with the work of educators Dr. Paul Dennison and Gail E. Dennison. The Dennison’s research was influenced and supported by over 80 years of studies in kinesiology (the science of body movement and its relationship to brain function), education, child development, developmental optometry, sports kinesiology and various other modalities. Today, Brain Gym® is used in more than 80 countries worldwide!

Brain Gym® and your baby

Brain Gym® movements were developed based on the developmental movement patterns in the first three years of life. Many of these movements and acupressure points stimulate the very same parts of the brain that are stimulated during the birth process while moving through the birth canal. Kim teaches these gentle, yet dynamic movements to parents, based on their child’s uniqueness, to support the optimal physical, emotional and cognitive development of their baby. Combined with infant massage, these adapted movements are a simple and profound expression of a parent’s love for their child.

Brain Gym® and postpartum depression

Having a baby is a joyous time! But for some women, postpartum depression, or the "baby blues," can closely follow this emotional high. About 75 to 80 percent of women experience some depression after childbirth. Symptoms can vary—a woman may feel sad, fearful, angry or anxious. These feelings may appear a few days after delivery and subside within a couple of weeks. However, for about 10 percent of mothers, depressive feelings get more severe, linger for weeks or months and can be so intense that they interfere with daily living.

Brain Gym® is a simple and effective tool for reducing stress and anxiety and accessing your internal resources for positive change in your life at this challenging time! There are many causes of postpartum depression – they may vary from chronic sleep deprivation and fatigue, excessively challenging newborns, sudden and dramatic hormonal changes, lack of support, a genetic predisposition or medical complications. Whatever the cause, we know that postpartum depression is no fault of your own…and it is temporary. You can take an active roll in your recovery with Brain Gym®!
